SIFF Cinema Egyptian Staff | Friday, February 4, 2022
SIFF cinema staff chose their favorite maternal characters to monumentalize the mamas in Parallel Mothers (now playing at SIFF Cinemas). Moms, in real life and in the movies, come in many shapes and sizes—sometimes they’re good, sometimes they’re bad, sometimes they’re anthropomorphic, and sometimes they’re dad.
When you’re at the Egyptian next, check out the display of their picks, always centered around upcoming programming and changed out every two to four weeks.
“I'm just like any modern woman trying to have it all. Loving husband, a family. It's just, I wish I had more time to seek out the dark forces and join their hellish crusade.”

Babe: [sobbing] “I want my Mom.” [crying]
Fly: [stares at Babe, then goes up to him] “There, there…you've got to be a brave boy, now. I left my mother when I was your age, and my puppies will have to leave me soon. But I'll keep my eyes on you, if you like, just till you find your feet.” [Rex shows up, sees Babe] “The little pig's a bit low. He's going to sleep with us, just till he finds his feet.”
- Picked by Elizabeth
Anna Coleman [in Tess Coleman's body]: “Darling. Could you, like, chill for a sec?”

Annie Graham: “Don’t you ever raise your voice at me! I am your mother!”
Peter: “Do you understand? All I do is worry and slave and defend you. And all I get back is that f***ing face on your face.”
- Picked by Max
"Just like your big booty mother."

“I don't think finding good examples of her being a mother is difficult, but the one scene that has always stuck with me is after the plane was shot down, after they all fell in the sea, after she had to calm Violet and Dash down and center them, after she made herself into a boat and Dash into the engine so they could get to land, when they pulled themselves up on the beach and she told Dash what a good job he had done, the look on both her and Dash's faces was so moving—you could tell how much those words meant to him. There are similar moments with Violet too. I loved her character in this movie, as a mom, a wife, and a woman.”

Claudia: “You became my mother, and my father, and so I am yours forever. But now it's fine to end it, Louis.”

Jeremy: “You were a girl once. Maybe you can teach me how to... you know, how to...”
Mrs. Brisby: “Behave yourself?”
