LaMotta is a man of flaming emotions, which serve him well in the ring, but damage his life with his Bronx beauty wife (Cathy Morriarty) and his loving but exasperated brother (the rewarding Scorsese-Joe Pesci alliance begins). Jake’s pig-headed passions hurt him as much as anyone, but his suffering might be prelude to redemption. Intense human drama is infused with artistic grandeur, as a lone figure shadowboxes to Muscagni’s achingly beautiful Cavalleria Rusticana music, and the fight sequences are more raw ballets than bullfights. Michael Powell was with his future wife Thelma Schoonmaker and Scorsese during production, and is credited with suggesting that the film should be in black and white. Powell felt the film was “absolutely superb. The most touching are the love scenes, the inarticulate desires of LaMotta, his jealousies, his love. It’s one of the most romantic films ever made. And the editing, the varying camera speeds. There are hundreds of cuts in the boxing scenes, hundreds."
