On the Train (2022) explores Taiwan’s South-Link Railway and the lives of its workers. Filmed over five years, this documentary captures their stories, spirit and resilience in the face of a vanishing chapter of Taiwan’s history, with Chen Ming-Chang’s music beautifully underscoring their journeys.


DIRECTOR BIO

Chu-Chen Hsiao is an experienced documentary director and TV series producer. She is currently an Associate Professor at National Tsing Hua University. Her documentaries The Red Leaf Legend (1999) and Grandma's Hairpin (2000) won Best Documentary at the Golden Horse Awards for two consecutive years and were nominated for and selected by IDFA, Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival, and many other prestigious film festivals. Hsiao has also dedicated herself to documenting the stories of Taiwanese filmmakers. Our Time, Our Story (2002) and Face Taiwan: Power of Taiwan Cinema (2015), which capture the decline and resurgence of the Taiwanese film industry, were both screened at the Busan International Film Festival and the Golden Horse Film Festival.
