Dana Fior's new documentary might contain the most devastating breakup scene you'll watch this year. Halfway through 1-800-ON-HER-OWN, Ani DiFranco—legendary ’90s folk singer and activist—is on a Skype call with the producer of her new album. The progress is going well, though complicated by COVID lockdown, and DiFranco's M.O. of self-producing her three decades of work has given way to true collaboration. "I want to finally write a song with someone," she admits at one point, heartbreakingly so. During the course of the call, though, an uneasy air forms on the part of the producer; his once friendly demeanor has fallen away. Suddenly, the producer cuts the cord with the following line: "I don't think I'm the right person for you." DiFranco is left shellshocked, unsure of what happened, how it came to this; the pain of rejection etched on her face. Where do you go from here? 1-800-ON-HER-OWN plays all the classics: talking heads, better-days montages, unexpected cameos (a wild Justin Vernon appears!), and interpersonal drama with exploitative colleagues. But this "breakup" scene and the subsequent fallout make the film something even better. How does an artist choose to move on in the face of rejection? How does an aging artist, even a firebrand icon like DiFranco, find her place and self-worth in an industry that has rejected her again? She does it—titularly, on her own. A testament to DiFranco's resilience as an artist, Dana Fior's documentary is required viewing for the DIY faithful.
