When André Masson, a senior appraiser at a well-known Parisian auction house, receives a letter from a lawyer claiming that a factory worker has discovered a famous missing painting by Egon Schiele, he’s sure it’s a fake. Nevertheless, he decides to investigate and travels to a city in Eastern France where, much to his astonishment, the painting hanging on the wall of a modest suburban cottage turns out to be authentic. It’s a long-lost masterpiece which disappeared in 1939, following its confiscation by Nazi officials, and later given to a French collaborator as a reward. This momentous discovery represents both an opportunity and a threat to André’s career, with further consequences for all those involved, including André’s ex-partner Bettina (Léa Drucker, Last Summer, which this director also co-wrote), his resentful intern Aurore, the lawyer representing the factory worker, the factory worker himself, and of course the painting’s rightful heirs, now living in the US. What ensues is a story of intrigue, deceit, and surprise that delves into both the harsh realities of the international art market and one of the darkest chapters in European history to expose the worst–and the best–of human nature. Based on a remarkable true story.
