Seattle native Kahlil Joseph makes his return to the city with his mesmerizing feature directorial debut BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions. Serving as director, writer, producer, and editor and building upon his 2020 short film and video installation of the same name, Joseph deftly intertwines narrative, personal family legacy, and archival footage into an uncompromising visual and cerebral feast. Though largely unconcerned with traditional linear narrative, the film frames itself in a story about a journalist fascinated by preeminent West African curator and scholar Funmilayo Akechukwu’s magnum opus, “The Resonance Field,” and goes on a journey of discovery through time and consciousness.
Joseph’s Afrofuturist vision comes to life with the support of master cinematographer Bradford Young (Selma, Arrival) and Academy Award®-winning editor Paul Rogers (Everything Everywhere All at Once). And for the cinephiles not yet familiar with artist and visual storyteller Kahlil Joseph, he’s been busy the last decade or so exhibiting work at museums, including the Whitney Museum of Art New York and Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, and collaborating with influential musicians such as Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, FKA Twigs, and Shabazz Palaces. Here, Joseph cements himself as an all-around visionary artist and filmmaker who’s capable of blurring the lines between art and journalism with a wink and smile.
