After his wife’s sudden passing, Lucky (William Catlett) finds himself a single father to nine-year-old Mason (Jeremiah Daniels). Not yet able to comprehend what has happened to his mother, Lucky watches in frustration as Mason goes on as if nothing’s changed, spending his days watching baseball on TV and drawing in his coloring book. Determined not to let his pain hurt his relationship with his son, Lucky pushes through his grief and makes it his mission to take Mason to his first baseball game. Father and son set out on an odyssey through Atlanta to make it to the stadium by sundown, come hell or high water. Cinematographer Nikolaus Summerer masterfully uses a tight aspect ratio and gorgeous black and white cinematography to create a striking sense of intimacy, equal parts captivating, uncomfortable, and heartwarming. In a dazzling performance far beyond his years, newcomer Daniels proves that disabled actors do belong on screen and deserve to tell their own stories. With this tender love letter to his native Atlanta, Black fatherhood, and radical compassion, debut feature director David Fortune announces himself as a fresh, eloquent voice that’s here to stay.
