Diamonds
In this lush, metatheatrical crowdpleaser that was a box office smash in its native Italy, SIFF favorite Ferzan Özpetek gathers 18 of his country’s greatest actresses to tell the story of a Rome-based tailoring shop that makes costumes for the big screen.

“Diamonds was born with the idea of exposing what I always do when I have a project in my head, which is to call the actors, tell them the story, and then go ahead with the script.” (Ferzan Özpetek)
Diamonds is a film set at the same time in 2024 and 1974. It is a memory about the glorious Sartoria Canova, a tailor shop that specialized in costumes for film and theatre, run by two sisters, Alberta and Gabriella, one tough and severe, the other emotional and tormented. Opposite characters that have to manage an important commission: the preparation of the costumes for a colossal set in the 1700s, designed by an insecure costume designer, Bianca. The struggles of individuals is what counts for these women, confronting and defeating their own demons—domestic violence, the shadow of depression, the longings and regrets—with only the support of their warm community and by recognizing the founding value of a union that transcends the canonical/imposed boundaries of “family.”
Diamonds must be credited with qualities that we perhaps take for granted or are no longer accustomed to encountering: sincerity, kindness, humanity. Like a hug, when we least expect it, that warms mind and body, and for which to be deeply grateful.
