Why is it easier to be an aimless teen trying to figure yourself out in Europe than in America? The distances are shorter, if you’re restless and decide you need a change of scenery as well as direction. Leonardo (Manfredi Marini), for example, at the age of the title (”nineteen”), is ready to escape his Sicilian smother-mother, and for lack of anything better to do decides to follow his older sister to London to study business. After a taste of bohemian freedom (sex, drinking, not cleaning the kitchen), he does come up with something better to do, and bounces back to Italy, specifically Siena, to study classic Italian literature. So Leonardo’s now found the right field, but has trouble fitting in, clashing with housemates and professors and eventually moving on to Turin. So far this is exactly the path Diciannove’s writer/director Giovanni Tortorici followed—“super-close” to his own life, is how he describes the film, to the extent of shooting, in the role of Leonardo’s apartment building, the same building in Siena Tortorici himself lived in as a student. Here his subject’s story diverges from his: What beckoned him to Turin was film study, which led to a job as assistant director to Luca Guadagnino, who loved the script for, and decided to produce, Tortorici’s debut film, which since its Venice premiere last August has been making the rounds of film festivals to molti acclaim.
