In North Macedonia, in a forest next to a field, a wild rave is happening, and the ravers include both humans and sheep. One of the humans is Ahmet, a 15-year-old-boy, whose passion in life is electronic dance music. But if he is an aspiring DJ by night, by day he is a shepherd, having been pulled out of school by his father to look after the family flock.

Ahmet shares his love of music with his younger brother, Naim, who hasn’t spoken since their mother died. It also brings him together with the neighbor girl, Aya, recently returned from Germany to go through with an arranged marriage. At one point, the three of them venture out on the mobile DJ unit Ahmet has rigged up on his tractor.

Their remote farming community of Yaruk is a conservative one, where tradition and religion loom large. Moreover, Ahmet and Naim’s father, still grieving his wife, has forbidden them to listen to music. All of this sets the stage for a culture clash of major proportions, but what first-time director Georgi M. Unkovski manages so well is to poke gentle fun at the contrasts between the time-honored and the modern, while also showing how they coexist side by side.
