Sasha Chuk’s Fly Me to the Moon is a deeply personal, quietly devastating look at fractured family ties, identity, and the weight of the past. Spanning 20 years, the film follows Yuen (Sasha Chuk), a Hunanese girl who emigrated to Hong Kong as a child, growing up in the shadow of her father—a man whose charm is rivaled only by his self-destruction. His repeated cycles of addiction and incarceration leave Yuen and her younger sister, Kuet (Angela Yuen), struggling to find their own way in a city that sees them as outsiders.

Drawing from her own experiences, Chuk weaves a story that feels simultaneously intimate and universal, its fragmented structure mirroring the messy rhythms of memory and reconciliation. Chuk’s gripping exploration of connection, loss, and the ties that refuse to break (no matter how much we may want them to) earned her a Hong Kong Film Critics Society award for Best Screenplay. Fly Me to the Moon captures the fleeting nature of connection—how it waxes and wanes like the moon itself, always shifting but never truly lost.
