“Everything that’s happened to Leonard is really a mirror for everything that’s happened to Indian people throughout history,” says Nick Tilsen (Oglala Lakota) of NDN Collective. Free Leonard Peltier outlines the decades-long efforts to free the Indigenous activist from prison through the commutation of his sentence at the age of 80 in January 2025. In addition, interwoven with the advocacy for Leonard’s freedom, the film presents important history about the American Indian Movement (A.I.M.) and the fight for Indigenous resistance along the way. This film is incredibly timely in its depiction of the abuses perpetrated by the US government toward the First Peoples of Turtle Island, as society currently contends with an administration focused on undermining the Constitution and civil rights. Knowledge is power, community solidarity and determination are strength, and film can remind us of our ability to resist and strive for a better reality for future generations. These are only some of the lessons in this historic documentary.
