Providing care for the elderly is more of a calling than a job, but what happens to caregivers when they lack nurturing in their own lives? We meet Sofie (Jette Søndergaard) as she begins her new elder-care job in a small Danish city. Each day, she travels from flat to flat, helping with bathing, cooking, cleaning bed sores, changing linens, and—most importantly—just chatting with lonely patients who feel abandoned. The recently divorced Sofie also struggles to raise her taciturn young daughter, who clearly prefers joint-custody visits with her father. Sofie’s even temperament is well-suited for her demanding tasks, but she is also subject to intense pressures of staff shortages and rudeness. When one of her client’s relatives lambastes her for alleged ineptitude, Sofie begins questioning her ability to maintain intimate connections with patients, co-workers, and even her own family. Director Frelle Petersen provides an unflinching look at modern-day senior care, showing the sometimes graphic humiliations of aging bodies, but mainly focusing on the job’s necessary compassion. Sofie’s journey is a naturalistic portrait of an overworked system still figuring out how to handle aging with grace and dignity.
