The Cheung family has made a nice little life for themselves in Hong Kong. Parents Hing and Lin own a beloved dessert shop, their daughter May has just started her dream job as a flight attendant, and their son Cheong is studying hard at university. But when matriarch Lin suffers a dire health crisis, the stresses begin to mount and the family takes their fear and grief out on each other. To make matters worse, both their livelihood and memories of their mother and wife are threatened when redevelopers start buying up the shop’s neighboring stores. Vincent Chow’s directorial debut utilizes beautiful color grading to replicate the rose-colored glasses through which we view the past, showing us scenes that look as if they are old family photos of the Cheungs that have been tucked away for decades. This tearjerker family drama contemplates whether it’s better to hold onto the past or let go and move on after a loss. It is a film for eldest daughters, appreciators of local businesses, and fans of a good bowl of red bean soup.
