Chongqing’s vibrant neon cityscape, experimental art galleries of Paris, and a virtual stag hunt set vivid backdrops for writer-director Flora Lau’s interwoven stories of lonely parents and adult children in search of meaning. In one thread, Ren (Sandrine Pinna), a young gallerist in Hong Kong, is pulled from the numbing virtual realm and across the globe to reunite with her long-estranged stepmother, Sabine (Isabelle Huppert). Across town, in a different socioeconomic spectrum, Wei (Guo Xiaodong), a remorseful fixer, finds himself drawn into the massive multiplayer environment as his only means to reconnect with his camgirl daughter. Their stories eventually intersect and comment on each other through the futuristic immersive quest, where players breathlessly chase a crystalline deer that’s forever tantalizingly out of reach. While the use of high-tech computer graphics and cinematography capturing sleek modern nightlife are each dazzling in their own way, the film’s most compelling images arrive when the action shifts to the City of Light. It’s there that Isabelle Huppert’s very presence makes the most persuasive case for being alive in the real world: unabashedly vaping, dancing like no one’s watching, and charging headlong into an icy sea.
