Set in a corner of Brazil that remains mostly untouched by the modern world, Marcielle (or “Tielle,” as everybody calls her) lives by the riverbanks with her father, mother, and three siblings. She grew up with the dream of following her older sister’s steps of leaving the region for a better life. As Tielle matures, her idealized visions shatter when she learns the harsh price of her sister’s freedom. Tielle realizes there is a never-ending cycle of abuse, one that already got her, but more disturbingly, one that is closing on her younger sister. Aware of the bleak future they face, she is determined to confront the oppressive system that has controlled her family and the women in their community for years. Backed by Academy Award®-winner Walter Salles and the Dardenne Brothers, Marianna Brennand’s illuminating narrative debut is born from a research project in the remote villages of the Amazon rainforest, where women have endured immense trauma since a tender age. Manas is the earnest and touching tale of a young girl left to fend for herself who finds a way to break free from a hostile home and a village that has resisted change for generations.
