Dublin, 1998. School is out and the long, lazy summer holiday stretches out before tomboy Katie and her best mates, Sarah and Danni, who exchange their school uniforms for low-waist jeans, high ponytails, and brash confidence. At 13 years-old, Katie feels the first pangs of adolescence: her soccer teammate Steo is suddenly a little bit more than the gawky boy who passes her the ball. What would change if they became more than just friends? Meanwhile, the tender attentions of her parents and the confines of her suburban estate grow more and more stifling. Securing invites to a local, raging party, the friends giddily revel in their newfound popularity. Katie attracts the unwelcomed attentions of Steo’s brother, the loutish Byrner, but finds herself drawn to the much older, sweet-talking charmer David. However, when these fun and games turn dark, the trio of friends find themselves on the tempestuous threshold of teenage life, pushed towards a maturity for which they are ill-prepared. Invigorated by an outstandingly vivacious young cast, Ready or Not vibrantly evokes such coming-of-age films as Mean Girls, Thirteen, and the work of Catherine Breillat, yet in her debut feature, director Claire Frances Byrne crafts a vital, singular vision all her own.
