Really driving home the reality of climate change, Rebuilding premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival as 14 destructive wildfires wreaked havoc on Los Angeles. A poignant backdrop that couldn’t have been planned for this quietly powerful story about what remains after everything burns to the ground. Max Walker-Silverman’s (A Love Song, SIFF 2022) sophomore film explores the journey of recovery, both physical and emotional. Surprising to no one, Josh O’Connor (God's Own Country, La Chimera, Challengers) delivers yet another knockout performance as Dusty, a cowboy who has lost his entire life to a Colorado wildfire. With the loss of his home comes the destruction of memories, family history, and an identity he’s spent his entire life building.

In the aftermath of the fire, Dusty finds himself in a FEMA camp, surrounded by others who’ve also been torn apart by tragedy. It’s here, amidst a group of strangers, that Dusty begins to learn the value of community—though he resists it at first, clinging to the belief that he must rebuild alone. As his struggles with both the loss of his ranch and the disintegration of his family are laid bare, Dusty realizes that rebuilding isn’t just about land or property. It’s about reconnecting with his daughter, Callie Rose (Lily LaTorre), and accepting that healing often requires the help of others.

The film doesn’t focus on melodrama or conflict for the sake of tension. Instead, Walker-Silverman crafts a moving narrative about resilience while finding a new way forward. Rebuilding is as much about mending relationships as it is about putting the pieces of life back together.

If the fire took everything, it also cleared a path for something new to emerge—something that is fragile yet essential. In the face of all that’s been lost, Rebuilding reminds us that even in the worst of situations, there’s room for growth, change, and the possibility of new beginnings. While the film deals with grief and trauma, it also delivers a message of hope: no matter what’s lost, there’s always something worth rebuilding.
