Scrapper
Harris Dickinson (Beach Rats, Triangle of Sadness) costars in this bright and engaging dramedy about a 12-year-old girl who lives alone in a London council house, only for her estranged father to suddenly return and roar back into her life.
In a council flat on the outskirts of London, resourceful 12-year-old Georgie lives alone following her mother's death. She keeps family services at bay using clever audio editing to counterfeit an uncle and ekes out a living by boosting bikes with her best mate Ali. Then one day her estranged father Jason shows up, having disappeared from her life so long ago she barely remembers him. Why has he chosen now to come back into her life? He's absolute rubbish, messy, can't even cook, and besides, she's doing fine on her own. However, Jason is determined to stay. As Georgie and her father warily test each other's resolve, the scales of maturity constantly shift between the pair. In her first feature film, director Charlotte Regan instills a vibrant, joyful energy into a narrative shimmering with humor, magical realism, and formal inventiveness. Lola Campbell gives a breakout performance, perfectly navigating Georgie's troubled psyche, going from brash and assured one moment to uncertain and vulnerable the next. Scrapper beautifully parses the emotional knots of grief, angst, and affection that bind father and daughter.
