The fantasy of chucking the urban lifestyle and running off to a pastoral ideal is a common trope in TV rom-coms, but the reality is not always as simple as it may seem. Mathyas (Félix-Antoine Duval), a Montréal-based copywriter, makes not only a back-to-basics career change but also moves to a new country, settling in a farm town in France to become, of all things, a humble shepherd. After solving the bureaucratic immigration details with Élise (Solène Rigot), a French civil servant, Mathyas becomes an apprentice shepherd for skeptical French ranchers. To his surprise, Élise is also inspired by the idea and impulsively decides to join Mathyas on his romantic journey. As they embark on an epic sheep drive through the French Alps, they both learn how a bucolic life can involve the same stress and logistical headaches they were escaping back in the city. The true co-stars in Sophie Deraspe’s travelogue are the intoxicating alpine panoramas, which are constantly upstaged by hundreds of woolly ovine extras. Based on an autobiographical novel by the real-life Mathyas Lefebure, who co-wrote the screenplay, Shepherds shows us how the flipside of office daydreams can lead to unexpected joys and tribulations.
