High schoolers pretending to be women to sneak a peek in the girls’ locker room sounds like a scheme swiped straight from a problematic ’80s sex comedy. But She's The He, with a director, cast, and crew made up mainly of transgender and queer individuals, takes this concept and delivers it with heart and hilarity. Certified horndog Alex (Nico Carney), and Ethan (Misha Osherovich), a more sensitive introvert, have been best friends forever. High school graduation looms, and for Alex so does the threat of being a virgin in college. Since their peers believe the inseparable pair are gay anyway, Alex concocts a plan. Harassed by jock classmates, tokenized by well-meaning teachers, and essentially ignored by the popular girls—maybe if the two pretend to be trans, they can avoid all that “basic,” “outdated” homophobia, and Alex can get closer to his crush. As the ploy progresses (with its share of dressing room montages, makeovers, and high school party scenes), the girls begin to invite them into their world, and Ethan comes to the realization that she really is transgender. Siobhan McCarthy directs this coming-out and coming-of-age comedy, inspired by the mid-aughts cult favorite She's The Man, a joke with a friend about conservatives’ fear of non-gendered bathrooms, and the critical need to express trans joy onscreen. She's The He gives the teen comedy a gender-fluid spin, proving to be a witty commentary on toxic masculinity as well as an act of resilience: facing the hateful political climate and ridiculous “bathroom ban” conversation with strength, humor, and community.
