Corsica, 1995. Fifteen-year-old Lesia is spending the summer with her close-knit extended family in a remote village surrounded by hills and woods, perched above the Mediterranean. She goes to the beach, hangs out with her friends, and flirts with a local boy–until one day, when her aunt wakes her early and drives her to an isolated villa on the other side of the island, delivering her to her father, Pierre-Paul.

Head of one of the island’s crime families, Pierre-Paul is hiding out with his henchmen. Given his status as a longtime fugitive, his contact with Lesia has been sporadic and constrained, something she resents. But this time is different–violence is breaking out among the nationalist groups and crime families, and Pierre-Paul must both defend his position and protect his daughter. Together, they go on the run and gradually she is drawn into his world.

An unusually accomplished first feature, shot in location on the island of Corsica with a cast composed largely of first-time local actors, The Kingdom manages to combine a powerful coming-of-age story, a touching portrayal of the relationship between a father and daughter, and a clear-eyed depiction of the intergenerational violence that results from a cycle of revenge.
