As it turns out, some of the bravest soldiers on the front line of the culture wars are…librarians! Few if any took the job of librarian to defend free speech because, well, access to diverse ideas used to be a given, practically a right. Not anymore. Kim A. Snyder’s documentary The Librarians shows what happened when some right-wing groups like Moms for Liberty decided that there are books so dangerous that, if kids were to read them, their minds would be instantly corrupted, and that these books needed to be banned from school libraries. What kind of books? Unsurprisingly, they are books that deal with LGBTQIA+ issues as well as racial issues. This manufactured controversy amped up after Texas Representative Matt Krause sent out a list of 850 books that should be questioned or removed because they “might make students feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress because of their race or sex.” Instead of pulling these books, many librarians stood up to censorship, only to be called out at school board meetings or threatened with bodily harm. The Librarians shows how this movement is spreading, which is scary, but it also makes you thankful that there are still some true heroes out there: Librarians!
