The Quiet Maid
What’s it like to work for the wealthy elite? In this drama of class conflict presented by Steven Soderbergh, Colombian maid Ana (Paula Grimaldo) has just arrived at the Costa Brava vacation estate of her rich new art collector employers, only to discover she’s being taken for a ride.
Director/Writer/Producer Miguel Faus scheduled to attend May 12 screening.
Ana, who has just arrived from Colombia, gets a job as a maid in a luxurious countryside mansion in sunny Costa Brava. It belongs to a family of art dealers who will spend the summer there. Ana works from dawn to dusk and without a contract, under the false promise of getting decent conditions at the end of the summer. She inconspicuously goes about her work as instructed, dutifully sending her wages home to pay for her younger sister to study medicine. But when she learns from Gisela, the maid from a neighboring house, that there are almost no chances the wealthy family will get her legal residency or offer a permanent job contract, Ana’s hopes are quickly crushed. But instead of feeling defeated, aided by Gisela’s refreshing friendship, Ana discovers her own ways to enjoy the summer and turn the tables with sheer ingenuity and determination. Writer-director Miguel Faus' subversive debut feature, The Quiet Maid, performed with subtlety and sensuality by Colombian actress Paula Grimaldo, is a satirical and highly satisfying tale of a woman's journey of empowerment in a world of glaring inequalities.
