Starring alongside Dylan O’Brien, writer-director James Sweeney’s Sundance Audience Award-winning Twinless finds a pair of unlikely fast friends filling the voids in each other’s lives after a meet-cute over stale cookies in a bereavement group for surviving twins. With slippery sensitivity, Sweeney plays Dennis as a bundle of anxious introversion longing for connection. O’Brien is the film’s standout performance, doing double duty as both Roman, the grieving small-town straight guy, and briefly as Rocky, his beloved swishy urbane gay brother who reinvented himself in Portland before an untimely demise.

Despite having polar opposite personalities, Dennis and Roman have been left adrift remembering how to exist in a world without their biological mirror beside them. The first act finds them hanging out constantly, bonding over the most mundane errands. Whether it's wandering through the Whole Foods produce aisle or chattering on the phone late into the night, they unexpectedly complete each other.

Poignant yet prickly, the wry gay-straight bromance never settles for easy quirk or cloying sentimentality. When the opening credits finally arrive late in the runtime, the dark comedy reinvents itself with an electrifying perspective shift that introduces a sense of uncomfortable complicity among the audience. With each successive act, Sweeney's metamorphic story structure and creative camerawork repeatedly recontextualizes and emotionally complicates on the way to a knockout conclusion.

Of local note, Seattle’s own Climate Pledge Arena makes an appearance when the boys take a road trip to bond over Kraken hockey.
