SEATTLE --- OCTOBER 25, 2016 --- For the eighth year SIFF is presenting its annual celebration of the best of current Italian films. The week-long event runs November 10 through November 17 at SIFF Cinema Uptown, and features fifteen extraordinary features with some of the biggest names in Italian Cinema today. The week kicks off on Thursday with our Opening Night film, Like Crazy, directed by SIFF favorite Paolo Virzi (Human Capital), and starring Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Micaela Ramazzotti (neither of whom have been better), as two patients who sneak away from a mental hospital for a journey that's funny, touching, and surprising. Join us after the film for our Opening Night Party in the Penthouse at Hotel Sorrento. Highlights include 2016 Berlin Film Festival Golden Bear award-winner for Best Film and Italy's Oscar® submission for Best Foreign Language Film, Fire at Sea, a documentary about the refugee crisis that contrasts the horror stories of migrants with the life of an average 12 year-old kid in Lampedusa; Anna (For Your Love), with a tour-de-force performance by star Valeria Golino, who garnered the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival; Indivisible, about conjoined twins who reluctantly face independence when they learn they can be separated; classic Italian film lovers will have an opportunity to see Ettore Scola's 1977 film A Special Day on the big screen, starring the incomparable pairing of Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni; and the chilling Libera Nos, winner of Best Film at the Venice Film Festival, a documentary that reveals the bizarre increase in exorcisms throughout Italy and Europe and the resulting demand for trained exorcists.
As a bonus, on Sunday, November 13 at 2:00pm - prior to director Laura Morante's Solo - Chateau Ste Michelle will present an hour-long wine tasting event, replete with delicious pairings of wines with antipasti selections - plus a tour of Italy with one of the oldest wine companies in the world, the Antinori family vintners, a wine company that goes back six centuries and 26 generations!
"Cinema Italian Style gets more exciting every year" says Beth Barrett, Interim Artistic Director of SIFF. "These films in our eighth festival are a great mix of comedy, documentary, and drama, with messages that are both incredibly timely and universal. We are proud to feature Paolo Genovese's Perfect Strangers, starring an impressive ensemble cast about a dinner party that spirals out of control; the return of director Claudio Giovanesi (Cinema Italian Style 2009, The House in the Clouds) with his compelling drama about young love, Fiore; Davide Ferrario's stunning and provocative hybrid documentarySexxx; and our Closing Night film, Opposites Attract with director Max Croci in attendance, followed by a fantastic after-party at the Atrium in Pacific Place (catered by the one and only, Il Fornio). Many of the films are award winners or were big hits with Italian audiences - I'm pleased that Seattle audiences will have a chance to see them."
Bookended by two fabulous parties and with special guests in attendance, the week promises to be una settimana di film straordinario! |
