Film Talk - Gems of Soviet Animation: Ethnofolk Tales

Soviet Animation: Ethnofolk Tales

February 7, 2024

Film Talks

Bundle up in your ushankas and grab some tea from the samovar for this new SIFF Film Talk, Gems of Soviet Animation: Ethnofolk Tales.

The Soviet Union was once composed of 15 Republicans, all abundant in culture, tradition, and mythology. Though authorities famously homogenized a majority of ethnic groups, artists manage to capture folklore through animation, propelling the cinema of the Soviet Union.

Join this two-hour Film Talk to tap into the history chronicling the formation and development of Soviet Animation from the 1920s to 1980s. We’ll discuss how it survived wars and political instability, its stylistic influences, and its role in society, the economy, and the international reputation of the Soviet Union.
