Like an ancient tale carved on a rune stone, Gone to Earth is a prime example of the 1940s-1950s British Neo-Romantic movement, in which visual and literary artists explored the mystical affinities between landscape, history, and human consciousness; a worldview that drives the Archers’ work. Actress Jennifer Jones is enchantingly intuitive as Hazel Woodus, a spirited young 19th-century woman who roams the wild Shropshire countryside barefoot, and raises a fox cub that escaped from hunters. One huntsman, Reddin the roguish squire (David Farrar), enflames Hazel’s desire, while Marston the pious, respectful vicar (Cyril Cusack) seeks her hand in marriage. The heather blooms, ancient pagan sites beckon—but there are hidden dangers. Hazel’s heart surges, her mind ponders, as she seeks her path. Cinematographer Christopher Challis’s Technicolor and Brian Easdale’s music heighten the film’s Celtic otherworldliness. Sybil Thorndyke, Hugh Griffith, Esmond Knight. 110 min
