There’s an old adage: you can’t have the good without the bad, and cinema is rife with examples. For every zenith of cinema—say Casablanca or The Godfather—there are corresponding nadirs, Barb Wire and Gotti. And yet, many cinephiles still manage to appreciate and make personal distinctions between good bad-movies and bad bad-movies. Why is it that revival screenings of Showgirls or The Room still attract raucous, adoring audiences ready to laugh at these films’ inanity, whereas screenings of the equally awful Battlefield Earth or M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, rarely, if ever, occur.
