Rewind, Be Kind

Big Fat Liar is an unexpectedly hilarious twist on “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” and an outrageous critique of the Hollywood studio system. Frankie Muniz plays Jason Shepard, a middle school student who travels to Hollywood and prove that egotistical Hollywood producer Marty Wolf (Paul Giamatti) stole his school paper to adapt into a movie.

Jason Shepard has a bad habit of lying, and everybody knows it. Paul Giamatti plays Marty Wolf, a narcissistic and corrupt Hollywood producer. When Marty Wolf steals Jason’s school paper and adapts it into a major motion picture, Jason embarks on a quest with his best friend (Amanda Bynes) to take credit for his work and get revenge. As Wolf’s employees and victims begin to turn on him one by one, a greater plan unfolds to not only prove Jason’s innocence, but to take down Marty Wolf and his corrupt production company once and for all.

In conversation with Marc Maron on the “WTF” podcast in January 2024, Paul Giamatti called Big Fat Liar the “weirdest” movie he’s ever done, saying he’d love it if it were the Blue Velvet and Paris, Texas of a generation– a movie that stays in their minds as a bizarre gem that they every so often look back on. His performance has a level of physicality that has never been seen before or since.

One thing is certain– “Hungry Like the Wolf” by Duran Duran will never be the same again.
