Picture it, it’s 2002 and acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson has just announced his new film. Oh good! A 90-minute, heartfelt romcom starring…Adam Sandler? Today in 2024 we understand that Adam Sandler is a force to be reckoned with, his work in Uncut Gems has solidified him as an incredible dramatic actor. But in 2002, PTA was taking a big risk. Audiences were displeased with Sandler at the helm of this film, fearing that his style of comedy could taint PTA’s work or his reputation. With a cinemascore of a D+, and a 17 mil box office gross against the 24 mil budget, Punch-Drunk Love was, as the kids say, mid. One thing however stood out at the time of release, Sandlers performance. Now, looking at it with modern eyes, we see that this film was way ahead of its time. With its absurdist comedy, mesmerizing score, perfectly aesthetic color palette and phenomenal performances from the cast (including Philip Seyour Hoffman with his 5 minutes of screen-time stealing the entire film!!), we can certainly say that Punch-Drunk Love is a film every human on earth should experience. We are proud to showcase this beauty on 35mm film, make sure to buy your tickets and don’t forget the pudding cups!
