Rewind, Be Kind: Sunshine (35mm)
July 28, 2024
Audiences didn’t take to Danny Boyle’s sci-fi thriller when it was originally released in the summer of 2007. The movie (set in the not-too-distant future of 2057) has us join a team of eight international astronauts aboard the Icarus II, a ship on a mission to reignite our dying sun thus preventing a second ice age. Presented on 35mm.

Despite being moderately well received by critics, Sunshine ranked outside of the top 10 in its domestic wide-release debut, behind fellow newcomers like The Simpsons Movie (#1), No Reservations (#5), and I Know Who Killed Me (#9). With a cast and crew that was impressive even in its time but has grown in notoriety ever since, it featured writing by Alex Garland (Ex-Machina) and starred future Academy Award winners (Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh) and superheroes (Chris Evans, Benedict Wong). An aggressive mix of influences (2001: A Space Odyssey, Solaris, & Alien were all cited by Boyle), impressive visuals, and a bananas third act all add up to warrant a watch and revaluation in our opinion. Come aboard the Icarus II.
