Rewind, Be Kind

The Phantom of the Opera is a romantic whirlwind of a movie set in a Parisian opera house. Emmy Rossum plays a dancer who gets thrust into fame all the while discovering the mystery of the opera’s Phantom. Is he her angel of music? It’s hard to tell–especially when her childhood love, Raoul, unexpectedly returns to her life as the new opera house financier. Despite this film being one of Schumacher’s largest spectacles, critics had an inconsistent list of complaints. Some, frankly, didn’t seem to like the musical, so winning them over was always going to be an upward battle. Others couldn’t make up their minds; it was either too similar to the musical or way too different. We aren’t entirely sure why there was so much inconsistency with the critics, but we feel that The Phantom of the Opera is a beautiful dream that deserves a revisit!

Joel Schumacher was never unfamiliar with the grandiose. In The Phantom of the Opera (2004) Schumacher adapts the world-famous musical to the big screen and goes all out with it. Emmy Rossum perfectly captures the wonder and warmth of the protagonist, Christine Daaé, an aspiring opera lead. Her path to achieving her dreams gets shaken by the return of her childhood love, Raoul (Patrick Wilson). Simultaneously, Christine gets entangled in the mystery of the opera and the mystery of the Phantom (Gerard Butler) who haunts it. Despite this film being one of Schumacher’s largest spectacles, critics had an inconsistent list of complaints. Some really didn’t seem to like the original Broadway musical that much in the first place. Others couldn’t make up their mind. Some reviews swear this is too similar to the musical to be worthwhile, while others felt it was way too different to be worth a watch. We aren’t entirely sure why there was critical inconsistency, but we strongly feel that Phantom of the Opera is a beautiful film that deserves a revisit!
