Richard Conte is an undercover cop posing as a doctor to investigate a murder in a big city hospital. Coleen Gray is the dedicated nurse who helps him get to the bottom of things—which may include the East River. Shot on location in New York City’s Bellevue Hospital, mostly in the dead of night, cinematographer William Miller manages to turn the typically bright and bustling environment into catacombs of crepuscular dread. Featuring a plot twist that proved all-too prescient, despite an awkward intro in which Conte—by the demand of New York City mayor William O’Dwyer—reassures the audience that such terrible things could never happen in real life.
