Reel Black: Black Love - Live Class
Join instructor Faridah Gbadamosi in examining the different portrayals of Black love in film, both in the mainstream and in independent films.
June 8, 2021
Black love on-screen has gone through many iterations from its introduction in the 1898 silent film Something Good – Negro Kiss to Barry Jenkins' Oscar-winning Moonlight, all with varying stories to tell onscreen and with progressively more authenticity behind the camera. These portrayals have ranged from aspirational to harmful, raising questions of what it means to be Black, how gender roles play out in our communities, what do we owe one another? In this class, we will examine different portrayals of Black love in film, both in the mainstream and in independent films, as a way of navigating the uneven societal terrain of historically-significant Black relationships that have paved the way for our modern renaissance of comedic and dramatic Black intimacy.
